Great State has been innovating digital experiences since 1997. We believe in the awesome power of technology to do great things for our clients and the wider world.

We're a team of 80 digital experts across studios in Bristol and London. We’re a truly collaborative agency with a diverse team of strategists, creatives and technologists constantly inventing and re-inventing.

Our size and independence offer you the best of both worlds – we're big enough that you’ll get to work with significant clients on challenging problems, but small enough that everyone has a powerful and important voice. We move fast and look to our tech team to keep us moving toward the future, whether that means cloud native applications, micro services, highly available message queues, or faster deployment pipelines.

This role is based in our East London office, where you’ll join a newly formed multi-disciplinary delivery team. As a Mid-Weight JavaScript developer, you will need to be up-to-date on the latest trends. You should be fluent in ES2016 and ES2017 syntax and have developed client side applications either by hand or using a VDOM based library (e.g. React, Vue, Inferno, Cycle).

You should understand patterns for complex client-side applications, including MVC or Flux, and understand how to leverage functional programming techniques. You should also be comfortable working with CSS processors including PostCSS and SASS and be up to date on modern features such as flexbox and grids.

A keen eye for design is a must as you work alongside our UX and Design departments. Great State takes accessibility seriously, you should be knowledgeable about the W3C WCAG technical standards and how to write compliant semantic HTML.

You should have in-depth knowledge of many of the following:

  • Semantic HTML

  • ES2016/ES2017 standards

  • Thorough understanding of VDOM based library

  • Flux architecture

  • PostCSS / SASS

  • Webpack

  • Functional programming concepts

  • git

Nice to have:

  • Umbraco or experience with similar platforms

  • Other languages such as C#, PHP, Java, Go

  • Gang of Four patterns

  • RESTful API design

  • Firebase, Contentful, or other BaaS platforms

In return we offer a fabulous working environment, excellent benefits, the chance to work on exciting projects, a place to learn constantly and make great friends.

For developers specifically, we give you the tools you need to get the job done. You will be provided with an IDE of your choice, funds and time for training, a Xeon E5 powered computer, dual screens, CI/CD with VSTS and a come-as-you-are dress code.
