We’re looking for someone to lead our growing User Experience team.

Experience design is an essential and established part of Great State and a key area of growth for us.  As well as continuing to shape the UX function, you’ll also work hands-on delivering inspirational experiences across a number of our client projects and across a range of channels – whether that’s large-scale websites, mobile apps, software. 

Our team currently delivers across the full spectrum of UX - from user-needs research, service design, concepting, through defining the IA, journeys, and system maps, and into design – both low-fidelity prototyping and collaborating with the UI, creative, engineering teams.

You’ll get chance to lead the UX direction on projects across our full range of clients including The Royal Navy, Honda and Orange to name just a few, as well as being an active part of acquiring new equally exciting clients. 

We need a passionate advocate of the business benefits of user experience, and you must be able to engage stakeholders with a compelling vision in presentations and pitches. Furthermore, you’ll show how you can deliver measurable results for our clients working hand in hand with the strategy and creative function. 

So, what do we need from you? You’ll be one of the senior members within the agency, so you’ll ideally have experience of leading UX teams within a fast paced digital agency, equally we’d love to speak to you if you’re currently a senior and believe you have what it takes to make this your next career move. 

The job 

  • Ensure all UX deliverables (user-needs research, service blueprints, UX strategy, IA, user journeys, low fidelity prototyping, user testing,)  are resourced and delivered on brief, on budget and delight the client. Award-winning would be good too!
  • You’ll be responsible for maintaining the quality of work we output for UX – which means you’ll need work with the team to plan projects, review work and input into deliverables where needed – as well as getting your hands dirty and delivering work once in a while
  • You’ll work collaboratively with strategy, creative and engineering teams to deliver innovative, well thought out and user-friendly pieces of work
  • You’ll have the ability to motivate and develop a permanent team of UX’ers, plus regular freelance resource. You’ll also need to recruit freelance and perm depending on the needs of the business.
  • Represent the interests of the team across the agency – whether that’s in planning resource, costing for projects or championing the side of UX
  • Promote UX both within the agency, to clients and within the wider digital network – whether that’s selling in a new process to client services, leading a client workshop, presenting work or talking at conferences  
  • Work closely with clients guiding brainstorms, leading working sessions, and giving senior presentations
  • Play a key role in new business proposals and pitches
  • Evolve and develop UX processes to meet the needs of an ever-changing digital landscape

Who we think you are

Candidates need to bring an excellent understanding of User Experience within Agency environments, have delivered cross platform projects to major clients, and have previously led other UX professionals. 

A qualification in HCI (or any other related discipline) would be great, but equally you may be an experienced UX professional with a lot of UX under your belt across a range of UX disciplines and projects. 

Specifically, you’ll need: 

  • Experience across the full range of UX deliverables (research, UX strategy, service blueprints, IA, low fidelity design) and tools e. Axure/ Figma etc.
  • Experience working as a lead UX designer across a range of large-scale web, responsive and mobile based projects
  • Proven experience in engaging demanding clients with a compelling vision in presentations, workshops and pitches
  • You have the ability to work independently – forming your own opinions, making your own decisions and standing by them 
  • The ability to motivate and inspire teams encouraging outstanding performance
  • You’ll be a digital enthusiast with a proactive desire to keep well versed on new digital trends and how to best implement them to get results
  • You’ll need to be able to work from our main Bristol office.
