Frontend Software Engineer

This job description details the minimum standard that we expect of you as a Front-End Software Engineer and employee of Great State.

A Front-End Software Engineer should be ambitious, passionate about quality (both from an engineering and an experience perspective), have a logical mindset, have good communication skills and confident in their own abilities.

You will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with all other departments within the business, responsible for the technical design, delivery and support of the projects that go through the studio.

Always looking to help shape, define, and improve the technical processes to ensure the overall project process runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

You are required to be a self-driven individual who can organise your time effectively, demonstrate a flexible but methodical approach and provide support and guidance for the more junior members of the engineering team.

From a technology point of view, we need you to be up to date with the following:

  • HTML, CSS (latest versions)
  • JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Gatsby
  • React
  • Redux
  • Content Management Systems (e.g. Sitecore, Umbraco, Prismic)
  • Modern web animation techniques and libraries (e.g. CSS animations, Canvas, Greensock)
  • Tools & techniques for optimising web performance & security
  • SEO & Accessibility best practices & guidelines
  • The best practices and checklists documented in the Engineering handbook

Your responsibilities as a Front-End Software Engineer are to:

  • To ensure that everything you do is built, delivered and presented to the highest level of quality possible, do not accept anything less.
  • Deliver projects in line with our coding standards, engineering principles, processes and industry best practice, working with more senior engineers where appropriate
  • Be user-focused and customer-focused in your technical approach, considering their needs first and ensuring your work meets the requirements of the customer and their end users
  • Promote a ‘think outside the box’ mentality to problem solving, planning and implementation to ensure we deliver world-class solutions
  • Contribute creatively throughout delivery; using your expertise to inspire and influence the creative direction of projects
  • Share tech-lead inspiration and trends with the wider Experience team. 
  • Work with the Experience team to build considered and crafted animations and interactions, to an industry leading standard.
  • Promote a positive approach to software engineering and architecture with a can-do attitude within the team
  • Peer review work across the Engineering team as needed
  • Feed into estimates for projects
  • Demonstrate the ability to pick up new projects and technology quickly
  • Update timesheets accurately and on time
